''If you are overweight or mildly obese and want to lose fat -- belly fat, visceral fat, liver fat -- vigorous aerobic training was better than resistance training," says researcher Cris Slentz, PhD, an exercise physiologist at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, N.C.

The study, which lasted for 8 months, assigned 144 men and women ranging in age from 18 to 70 to three groups, aerobic training, resistance and weight training and a combination of the two and focused on visceral fat.

Visceral fat is the layer of fat that is located deeper in the belly then the subcutaneous fat which is responsible for muffin top. Visceral fat is linked to an increased risk for heart disease, diabetes, and other health problems.

According to the results aerobic training allowed participants to lose the most visceral fat, combination training allowed for more reduction in belly fat while the resistance training group lost belly fat but gained visceral fat.

As for why aerobics training works best for losing visceral fat then resistance training, it simply burns more calories than resistance training does. I really believe that's all there is to it."
