Vitamin D: Protection against colon cancer
We have all heard the ad campaign, "Milk it does a body good," and a new analysis of earlier research findings shows us once again how incredibly important vitamin D is to all of us.
An article posted on Reuters Health on September 1, 2011 explains how increasing your intake of vitamin D could decrease your risk of colon and rectal cancer.
According to an article in the Journal of Clinical Oncology researchers report that in 18 different studies of more then 10,000 people, colon cancer risk was as much as 33 percent lower in subjects with the highest blood levels of vitamin D compared to those with the lowest levels.
Although studies are still sparse, Dr. Huanlong Qin and his colleagues from The Sixth People's Hospital affiliated with Shanghai Jiao Tong University in Shanghai said that new studies would be "highly desirable to enable more precise estimates and a better understanding of the role of vitamin D in colorectal cancer carcinogenesis."
Although no one knows as yet how the sunshine vitamin works it seems that vitamin D is much more important then was first thought and it has been linked with several different types of protections including protection for various cancers, heart disease, diabetes and asthma, among other conditions.
According to statistics, more then 58% of American adults have a vitamin D deficiency which is "an important health problem in the industrial world," Qin's team said.
For now there is no recommendations to increase your intake of vitamin D beyond the recommended daily dosage because a review done by the U.S Institute of Medicine concluded that there was simply not enough information as yet to justify an increase but it looks as if the more vitamin D you get the stronger the benefit is.
Vitamin D can be found in milk, shiitake mushrooms, mackerel, shrimp, sockeye salmon, eggs, herring, sardines, catfish, tuna fish, cod liver oil and of course the sun itself.
